Color in Your Life

Tips from the Pros

by Violante & Rochford Interiors

We are masters of a neutral background: it gives us so much opportunity and freedom to add color to every project. Color allows us to give a more dynamic environment while still keeping a room, like the one shown, dreamy. We find out what colors really appeal to our clients and go with it! We have even designed an entire house around a client’s favorite piece of clothing.

The accompanying pictures show a library in a home we recently completed in Santa Fe. While it is always important in a gorgeous location like New Mexico to let nature outside inform every space, this cozy room is the clients’ favorite room in which to have cocktails, read or just relax in front of a roaring fire. We use color in every aspect of the room — on the upholstery, pillows, rugs, window treatments and even in the art.

Pantone, creator of the premier color matching system, speaks about the color palette for fall and winter 2020 and into 2021: “Colors with longevity, versatility and a rich, timeless narrative” are what people want now, as they strip down their lifestyles to meet the times.

Because we designed this room as a place to feel happy and protected, we used a color palette of warm neutrals, like Almond Oil, Ash and Mocha Bisque, with bright pops of color, like Samba and Fired Brick.

Our advice on using color in your own home: Don’t be afraid to use it! It brings a freshness to a space that is exhilarating. While not every shade of a color looks fabulous together, don’t get hung up on matching the different versions of a hue in a room if it looks right. And most of all, have fun with color. It can give any room a bit of whimsy and an extra dose of texture, and it can make every room unique, sophisticated and stylish.
