Evenly Scattered
Gregory Calibey, Garden Repose, oil on linen, 29 x 30"
Rather than starting with a preconceived notion of a common underpinning that might pull together all the work in this scattershot group show, guest curator Ivo Watts-Russell selected pieces with the intention of letting the images themselves deliver their own rich surprises. Comprising about 40 works, including painting, photography, and assemblage, by eight artists from the U.S. and abroad, the show, he hopes, will captivate the viewer through the original and unexpected qualities of each individual work. From Carolyn Machado’s trash-to-treasures mosaics to paintings by Gregory Calibey that recall hand-colored photographs, the pieces indeed resist simple sorting—except, says Watts-Russell, by one criterion: “Each and every one of these artworks have given me such an extraordinary pleasure.”
