Drift, William Zweifel, cast and woven glass, 18 x 12 x 8"
Years of experimentation and much broken glass went into the development of William Zweifel’s techniques for creating his woven-glass sculptures. The primarily self-taught ex-entrepreneur relies on methods borrowed from fabric artists to build simple pieces that exploit fundamental forms, touching on the fragility of existence and the power of a frozen moment. Paired with several works by 25-year contemporary-glass-art veteran Tim Shaw, Zweifel’s pieces are on display through March 13. According to Youens, the choice to combine these woven-glass works with Shaw’s colorful, blown-and-carved vessels simply reflects the founding concept behind her eight-month-old business: “I’m looking,” she says, “for the cutting edge.”
