Bird’s Nest Invitational
Roseta Santiago, Nest Egg II, oil on canvas, 10 x 12"
Inspired by artist Roseta Santiago’s recent series of bird’s nest paintings—and the feelings evoked by this powerful symbol of security and comfort, yet also the excitement of first flights—Brandon Michael Fine Art has invited more than 50 artists from around the country to contribute small pieces (up to 154 inches square) relating to these themes. Like the moody depths—and ultrafine detail of the grass and eggshell patterns—in Santiago’s canvases, the focus on birds’ nests seems a perfect fit for a late-winter show. “February is a month to take stock and look forward,” says the gallery’s Linda Chmar. “It’s the dead of winter but spring is just around the corner.” And with a portion of the proceeds going to Audubon New Mexico, based just up Canyon Road at the Randall Davey Audubon Center, the array of oils, pastels, watercolors, and sculpture in the show offers hope in a more tangible sense as well: Birds, too, will benefit from this golden egg.
