A Local's Guide to New Mexico
To really get to know a place it takes some digging—beyond the tourist attractions, to its particular vibe and its people’s way of life. Sharon Niederman’s New Mexico: An Explorer’s Guide (The Countryman Press, $20) gets to the heart of what gives New Mexico the title “Land of Enchantment.” A resident of Albuquerque and Raton, and lover of all things New Mexico, she has been traveling, writing, and photographing in the state for a quarter century. Her new guidebook provides a candid, conversational account of both its most popular and less well-known sites. Small towns, Niederman knows, are jewels, and she has explored all the nooks and crannies. In Dixon, on the High Road to Taos, “there’s a sweet co-op grocery store in the middle of town next to the library where you can pick up supplies and a great cup of coffee.” Here’s a travel guide that suits its subject matter.
