One of the many joys of the Santa Fe lifestyle is our ease in connecting to the incredible beauty that surrounds us. Whether in an art gallery or on a hiking trail, we have a way to escape world events and lose ourselves in the natural or created beauty. Nothing more than a short drive puts you at the trailhead of a different world, literally and figuratively: a world of grand vistas, flowing mountain streams, shady forests, and a world that knows nothing about human dramas. It’s the look of the sky, a beautiful painting of nature, an intriguing piece of jewelry, a sculpture of an animal, even an abstract painting that gives us the freedom to find our own sense of the sublime. When we wander in such gorgeousness we’re taken far away from our troubles. Once there, we can...

History and the Romance

This year marks Santa Fe’s 400th anniversary—but of course the history and inhabitants of the Santa Fe area pre-date the arrival of the Spanish in 1610. Every time a new building is planned in downtown Santa Fe, an extensive dialogue ensues between past and present, the city again seems to discover (or rediscover) another fascinating moment of its history, and everyone from archaeologists and historians to parking attendants and cab drivers weighs in on how best to proceed, while making sure all the unearthed artifacts are well preserved. We are blessed to have such a rich history and live in a place that wants to savor the details and understand its former and sometimes ancient inhabitants. (While my house is relatively new, I know that I’m not the first human to...

Internationally known fashion designer Michael Kors recently called out Santa Fe as one of the places that gives him inspiration for his clothing designs. He put us in the same league with New York, Los Angeles, and Paris. We have all known that this has always been one of those places that highly creative people come to for creative energy. The art created here, the books written here, the music composed here—they’re all testaments to this fact.

In this issue, you will see a vast assortment of creative things. Not only did we peruse the shops and galleries to show you items that could be perfect as holiday gifts, we’ve also gone behind the adobe walls to show you how locals display the beautiful objects they have collected.

The act of collecting,...

How to Buy a Magazine

When the previous ownership of the Santa Fean Magazine first offered it to me in February of this year, I was flabbergasted. I didn’t see it coming and was immediately overwhelmed with thoughts bouncing around between my ears. I walked in a daze. This was just prior to the Presidents Day weekend.
The 3 day weekend was just what I needed to process the opportunity that I was being presented. I had no idea what my answer should be but knew I needed to ask some important questions.  First was to figure what the questions were.
I boiled the questions down to just two. 1) Was this a good business decision and 2) was this a good decision for me personally. That weekend I skied all 3 days at Santa Fe Ski area, fortunate to have...

Winter time fun in Santa Fe

By the time you’re reading this, the entire mountain at the Santa Fe Ski Area should be open. So far the bottom of the mountain is open and the snow is great. Regardless of your skill level, there are runs for you to ski at the Santa Fe Ski Area.
As you as you line up in the front of the Quad Chair, or the Super Chief as they like to call it on their brochures, you’ll notice something very different. A yellow conveyor belt now carries you into position for the chair lift to swoop behind you and scoop you up. In an effort to reduce loading problems for the more inexperienced, the ski area management has come up with this...

1st Annual Historical Canyon Road Festival

For those of you who were out and about this past Saturday, October 18 on Canyon Road, you witnessed the 1st annual Historical Canyon Road Festival. We had more than 50 artists out painting on the street, in the gardens and even on the porches. It was a wonderful opportunity to watch artists work and even visit with them about the art. Many of the artists were rewarded by selling the art to observers. The highlight of the day was the fabulous weather that made it such a joy to be out. In addition, there is a competition for the artists sponsored by the Santa Fean. Watch on Santafean.com and in the magazine pages for the announcement of the winners. All submissions, and there are already alot of them, are due Oct....
